Eccentric Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
A condition characterized by increased wall thickness and mass of the left ventricle due to increased venous return and sustained cardiac output.
Concentric Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
A condition that occurs with resistance training, characterized by increased left ventricular mass without the increased end diastolic volume.
Cardiac Output
The amount of blood the heart pumps in a given time period.
Venous Return
The amount of blood returning to the heart from the body.
End Diastolic Volume
Volume of blood in the ventricles at the end of filling, before contraction.
Muscle Pump
The mechanism by which muscular contractions help to return blood to the heart.
Contractility
The ability of the heart muscle to contract and generate force.
Eccentric Loading
Stretching of the ventricular myocytes due to increased volume of blood returning to the heart.
Increased Total Peripheral Resistance
Increased resistance in the blood vessels that the heart must work against, leading to higher blood pressure.
Wall Thickness
The thickness of the walls of the heart's chambers, particularly affected by different training types.
