Compensation Time
When an employee works more than the number of hours scheduled, they may be eligible for compensation time, with Supervisor permission, within the year it is earned.
Overtime/Compensatory Time
Defined in Article 12 of the Agreement.
Overtime Compensation
If an employee exceeds 171 working hours during a 28-day period, they are compensated at 1.5 times their regular rate of pay.
Short Shift Overtime Compensation
If an employee is called out to work overtime for a short shift, they will be compensated at 1.5 times their regular rate of pay.
Off-Duty Drug and Alcohol Testing Compensation
If an employee is required to participate in the City of Valparaiso Drug and Alcohol Testing Program on off-duty time, they will be compensated at 1.5 times their regular rate of pay.
Compensatory Time, Vacation, or Personal Time Approval
All compensatory time, vacation, or other personal time shall be taken at the discretion of the employee with the approval of the Chief of Police or his designee.
Uniform Duty Staffing
Employees assigned to Uniform duty shall be provided adequate staffing to utilize their vacation, personal, and compensatory time.
Overtime Request Approval
All requests for overtime must be approved by a Shift Supervisor or above.
Court Compensatory Time
Employees receive a minimum of two (2) hours of compensatory or overtime pay when appearing during off-duty hours before any court or at the County Prosecutor's Office or when subpoenaed.
Holiday Leave
Department employees working 8 hours (7 for civilians) are granted off each holiday with pay; 12-hour patrol shifts are paid 12 hours for each holiday if they work or are on a regular day off. If scheduled to work and request the holiday off, they are not paid.
Sick Leave
Program to provide salary continuation for employees who are legitimately sick or injured, including mental illness and surgical procedures.
Sick Leave Accrual
On January 1st of each year, each employee is credited with forty-eight (48) sick hours (42 for civilian employees).
Reporting Sick Leave
Each employee reporting off sick shall contact the Valparaiso Police Department at least one hour prior to their scheduled tour of duty.
Sick Leave Documentation
Employees who report off due to illness or injury for three (3) or more consecutive days must submit a physician's statement and medical release to the Chief of Police.
Administrative Leave
Leave taken when circumstances arise where an employee needs leave that is not already due to them, requiring a petition to the Chief stating the reason, length of time off needed, and any additional information for a decision.
Vacation Benefits
Employees receive vacation time based on the length of continuous service with the City, ranging from 10 working days (1-4 years) to 25 working days (15+ years).
Vacation Selection Process
Selections are made on the Master Vacation Schedule posted by November 1st, with employees having until December 31st to make their selections within each shift/division by rank, seniority, and performance evaluations.
