Glycolysis
The first step in the breakdown of glucose to extract energy for cellular metabolism.
Anaerobic
A process that does not require oxygen.
GLUT Proteins
Integral proteins that facilitate the diffusion of glucose into cells.
Pyruvate
A three-carbon sugar molecule produced at the end of glycolysis.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
The energy currency of the cell, produced during glycolysis.
NADH
The reduced form of NAD, a high-energy electron carrier produced in glycolysis.
Hexokinase
An enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of glucose in the first step of glycolysis.
Phosphofructokinase
A rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of fructose-6-phosphate to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate.
Substrate-Level Phosphorylation
The direct transfer of a high-energy phosphate group to ADP to form ATP without the involvement of an electron transport chain.
Isomerase
An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of a molecule into one of its isomers.
Pyruvate Kinase
The enzyme that catalyzes the last step of glycolysis, producing pyruvate and ATP.
