Nutrix
The Latin word meaning 'to nourish,' from which the term nursing originated.
Four Blended Competencies
The core nursing skills comprising Cognitive, Technical, Interpersonal, and Ethical/legal competencies.
QSEN Competencies
Nursing competencies consisting of Patient-centered care, Teamwork and collaboration, Quality improvement, Safety, Evidence-based practice, and Informatics.
Primary Health Promotion
Health promotion directed toward promoting health and preventing the development of disease processes or injury, such as immunization clinics or poison-control information.
Secondary Health Promotion
Health promotion focused on screening for early detection of disease with prompt diagnosis and treatment, such as growth assessments in children and vision examinations.
Tertiary Health Promotion
Health promotion beginning after an illness is diagnosed and treated, aiming to reduce disability and rehabilitate patients to a maximum level of functioning.
The Health Belief Model
Model developed by Rosenstock concerned with individual health perceptions based on three components: perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, and perceived benefits of action.
The Health Promotion Model
Model developed by Murdaugh illustrating how people interact with their environment to pursue health, incorporating individual characteristics and behavior-specific knowledge.
The Health-Illness Continuum
A conceptual model viewing health as a constantly changing state with high-level wellness and death on opposite sides.
Agent-Host-Environment Model
Traditional model by Leavell and Clark viewing the interaction between an external agent, a susceptible host, and the environment as causes of disease.
Stages of Change Model
Model by Prochaska and DiClemente addressing behavior change through stages: Precontemplation, Contemplation, Determination: Commitment to Action, and Action: Implementing the Plan.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs
A pyramid structure categorizing human needs into lower-level needs (Physiologic, Safety and security) and higher-level needs (Love and belonging, Self-esteem, Self-actualization).
Nurse Practice Acts
State laws that define the legal scope of nursing practice, create a state board of nursing, establish criteria for licensure, and define titles for RNs and LPNs.
Core Professional Nursing Values
The five essential professional values identified by AACN: Human Dignity, Integrity, Autonomy, Altruism, and Social Justice.
Nursing Process
A systematic clinical framework consisting of Assessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.
Sentinel Event
An unexpected occurrence involving death or serious physical or psychological injury, such as wrong-site surgery or hospital suicide.
Never Events
Serious reportable events that should never happen to a patient, such as a retained surgical item or discharging an infant to the wrong person.
