What is anxiety?
Excessive worry or fear that may cause physical and emotional symptoms.
What physical symptoms can anxiety cause?
Palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, and GI upset.
What is depression?
Mood disorder with persistent sadness/loss of interest and functional impairment.
What should an MA do if a patient expresses suicidal thoughts?
Stay with the patient if in the office, notify the provider immediately, and activate emergency protocol.
What is substance use disorder?
Problematic substance use causing impairment or distress.
What is therapeutic communication?
Professional communication that supports patient understanding and trust.
What is active listening?
Fully focusing, allowing the patient to speak, using verbal/nonverbal cues, and clarifying.
What should the MA avoid when speaking with behavioral health patients?
Judgmental language, arguing, minimizing concerns, or giving false reassurance.
What is a panic attack?
Sudden intense fear with physical symptoms such as chest tightness, dyspnea, and palpitations.
What should an MA do if a patient is aggressive or threatening?
Maintain safety, keep exit accessible, get help, and notify provider/security per policy.
What is confidentiality in behavioral health?
Protect patient information unless disclosure is required for safety/legal reasons.
What is the MA role in behavioral health screening?
Provide forms, collect data, observe, report concerns, and document; do not diagnose.
