Subtraction (Primary School Level)
A perspective where individuals believe problems cannot be bigger than their capacity, often shouting "impossible" when faced with equations like 2−8 or 2−5 and relying on the concept of "borrowing one" to solve them.
Subtraction (Adulthood/Reality)
The realization that life can push an individual below 0 through cumulative losses in a single day, such as losing a job, a loved one, a relationship, or health.
Negative Side of the Number Line
A mathematical representation of the reality where things can get worse than zero, such as becoming poorer, carrying more responsibility, or experiencing intensified abuse or disappointment.
Resilience
The essential quality needed to survive and remain standing when life's constant subtractions (time, grief, failure, pain) occur.
Base of Zero
The neutral point on the number line that an individual in the negative (e.g., −10) must first reach before they can begin to build a visible positive life.
Comeback Difficulty
The phenomenon where progress is less visible because an individual is working to climb out of a "hole" in the negative number line to reach 0 before they can move forward to 1 or 2.
Positive Number Line Buffers
Non-optional life elements such as community, joy, and healthy relationships that provide the capacity to handle subtractions without falling into negative numbers.
Additions to Self
Proactive efforts to acquire knowledge, skills, discipline, savings, and emotional regulation to ensure one starts from a high value like 100 rather than 2 before life begins its subtractions.
Living on the Edge
A mistake where individuals ignore their health, finances, and emotional well-being, leading to exhaustion and a difficult recovery when life subtracts values suddenly.
Adulthood Wisdom
The process of building enough character, support, faith, and resources so that a life is strong enough to survive when life subtracts values up to 100.
