Expressions
A finite string of mathematical symbols(numbers, operations, variables) that are grouped to show a value
Equation
Statement that shows that two expressions are equal to eahc other
algebraic expression
A mathematical sentence that includes at least one operation and a variable and consists of tterms
Terms
A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. They are separated by addition and subtraction signs
Constant
A number itself in an algebraic expression
variable
Letter that represents an unknown quantity and written without a numerical part as it has a coefficient of one
Coefficient
The number being multiplied by a variable
Range
the difference between the highest and lowest scores in a set of data
Inverse mathematical operations
Opposites of each other and cancel each other out. Ex: to cancel a subtraction operation, use addition. To cancel a division operation, use multiplication. If you want to cancel multiplication of a fraction, you can cancel the multiplication by division. Recall that to divide by a fraction, you need to multiply by the reciprocal of the fraction.
Solve
to find the answer
1. Combine(simplifying an expression by using the distributive property) all variable terms(any term that includes an unknown quantity) on one side of the equal sign using inverse operations 2. Combine all constants on the other side of the equal sign using inverse operations 3. Use inverse operations to isolate the variable
To solve an equation means to find the value of the variable that will make the equation true(both side of the equation have the same value):
Solution
the answer to a problem
Proportional
An equation that states that two ratios are equivalent
Ratio
Shows the number of times one number is contained within another number
Constant of proportionality
A proportional relationship between two quantities occurs when the ratio of one quantity to another is constant or when one fraction is equivalent to the other. The constant rate is called this(the constant ratio between two quantities)
K
The contrast of proportionality is represented by this variable
Cross multiplication
To solve a proportional relationship with an unknown quantity, this method can be used
