Cell
smallest unit that can perform all life processes

Prokaryote
organism that consists of a single cell that DOES NOT have a nucleus

Eukaryote
organism made up of cells that DOES have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; plants, animals, and fungi are made up of these cells

Organelle
small bodies in a cell's cytoplasm that are specialized to perform a specific function

Cell wall
only found in plant cells; rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell

Cell Membrane
phospholipid bilayer that covers a cell's surface

Nucleus
organelle that contains the cell's DNA and directs the cells processes; found in eukaryotic cells; "brain" of the cell

Mitochondrion
break down food (ATP) and release energy to the cell

group of similar cells that perform a common function

Organ
collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body
