Weathering
Is the process that breaks down rocks into scree.
Erosion
Carries the scree away and leave them elsewhere.
Denudation
Weathering + Erosion
3 types of weathering
Mechanical, Chemical and Biological.
Mechanical Weathering
Freeze-thaw action
Freeze-thaw action
Rain that gathers into the rocks cracks and freezes when the temperature drops. It expands, putting pressure on the rock, causing it to lie deeper into the cracks when it thaws. Overtime, the cracks start to break into scree.
Chemical weathering
Carbonation
Carbonation
Rain seeping into the joints of limestone rock. The acidic water causes the limestone to slowly dissolve away. Weaker parts of limestone dissolve quicker and form grikes.
