Supine Position
A patient position in which the head, knees, and feet are at approximately the same level.
Orthostatic Hypotension
A sudden drop in blood pressure caused by a rapid change in patient position, such as moving abruptly from a supine to an upright position.
Operator's Zone (Right-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 7 to 12 o'clock where the operator is positioned to access the oral cavity with optimal visibility.
Transfer Zone (Right-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 4 to 7 o'clock where instruments and materials are exchanged between the dentist and dental assistant.
Assistant's Zone (Right-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 2 to 4 o'clock occupied by the dental assistant.
Static Zone (Right-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 12 to 2 o'clock located directly behind the patient, holding equipment such as the rear-delivery unit, air-water syringes, and handpieces.
Operator's Zone (Left-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 12 to 5 o'clock where a left-handed operator is positioned.
Transfer Zone (Left-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 5 to 8 o'clock used for instrument exchange in left-handed dentistry.
Assistant's Zone (Left-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 8 to 10 o'clock occupied by the dental assistant in left-handed dentistry.
Static Zone (Left-Handed Dentistry)
The clock zone from 10 to 12 o'clock located directly behind the patient in left-handed dentistry.
Right Front Position (7 o'clock)
An operating position that facilitates examination and work on mandibular anterior teeth, mandibular posterior teeth (especially the right side), and maxillary anterior teeth.
Right Position (9 o'clock)
An operating position convenient for working on the facial surfaces of maxillary and mandibular right posterior teeth and occlusal surfaces of mandibular right posterior teeth.
Right Rear Position (11 o'clock)
The position of choice for most dental operations, where the operator sits behind and slightly to the right of the patient.
Direct Rear Position (12 o'clock)
An operating position with limited application, used primarily for operating on the lingual surfaces of mandibular anterior teeth.
Maxillary Arch Operating Orientation
Positioning of the maxillary arch during operation such that the maxillary occlusal surfaces are oriented approximately perpendicular to the floor.
Mandibular Arch Operating Orientation
Positioning of the mandibular arch during operation such that the mandibular occlusal surfaces are oriented approximately 45∘ to the floor.
Assistant Stool Height
The seated position for the dental assistant, which should be 4−6 inches higher than the operator's stool for maximal visual access.
Instrument Exchange Zone
The area located below the patient's chin and several inches above the patient's chest where all instrument exchanges must take place.
Rubber Dam
A flat, thin sheet of latex or non-latex material held by a clamp (retainer) and frame, perforated to allow teeth being worked on to protrude while isolating and protecting the rest of the mouth.
Rubber Dam Retainer
A component used to anchor the rubber dam to the most posterior tooth to be isolated and to retract gingival tissue.
Test of Water
A verification procedure in rubber dam isolation where water is placed around the isolated tooth to check for leaks into the patient's mouth before starting treatment.
Absorbent Pads / Wafers
Cellulose isolation materials that are more absorbent than cotton rolls or gauze, commonly placed inside the cheek near the parotid duct.
Gauze Sponge (2×2 inch)
An unfolded 2×2 inch (5×5 cm) piece of gauze spread over the tongue and posterior mouth to serve as a throat screen and recover dropped items.
High Volume Evacuators
Suction devices that provide excellent lip retraction, rapidly remove toxic materials and debris, and decrease overall treatment time.
Saliva Ejectors
Auxiliary suction tools used for removing water and debris, placed in the corner of the mouth opposite the quadrant being treated.
Retraction Cord
A plain or impregnated cord placed into the gingival sulcus to displace free gingiva, control sulcular fluid, decrease bleeding, and prevent excess restorative materials from entering the sulcus.
Mouth Props
Block-type or ratchet-type devices that relieve the patient of the effort of maintaining an open mouth, promoting relaxation during procedures.
Atropine
A drug used in restorative dentistry to control salivation, which is contraindicated for nursing mothers and patients with glaucoma.
