Repression

when a person unconsciously forgets a memory

Suppression

when a person consciously avoids a situation

Unconscious mind

drives, urges, and instincts that we are not aware of (first level of mental life)

Conscious mind

to be keenly aware of something (second level of mental life)

Preconscious mind

forgotten content that can be retrieved and brought to awareness (third level of mental life)

ID

The pleasure seeking principle, seeks gratification without regard

Ego

the only region of the mind in contact with reality

Defense Mechanisms

the ego’s way of protecting us from tension and anxiety

Oral phase

obtain life sustaining nourish through the oral cavity (first stage of development)

anal phase

anal eroticism leading to an overly orderly characteristic (second stage of development)

phallic phase

genital area becomes the leading erogenous zone leading to the male/female oedipus complex (third stage of development)

Male oedipus complex

having the desire of wanting to do away with the father and sexually desiring the mother

Female oedipus complex

having hostility toward males genitals and wanting to do away with the mother and sexually desiring the father

Latency

going through a dormant of psychosexual development produced by the parents attempts at punishing or discouraging sexual activity
