what is realistic conflict theory?
Theory that explains prejudice as arising from competition for limited resources. Conflict will occur when groups compete for these resources.
what is intergroup competition?
Competition between different groups, usually for resources.
what is negative interdependence?
Both groups seek the same goal, but only one can attain it, creating a conflict of interest.
what does negative interdependence lead to?
It leads to hostility between groups but also strengthens solidarity within the in-group.
what are limited resources?
Scarce materials or opportunities that can lead to competition and conflict between groups.
what are examples of symbolic resources?
Power and prestige.
what are examples of physical resources?
Specific physical and finite resources, which result in the fiercest prejudice.
what is positive interdependence?
When groups have to rely on each other to achieve a goal, prejudice decreases.
what are superordinate goals?
Goals which can only be achieved through intergroup cooperation.
what effect do superordinate goals have?
They can lead to increasingly favourable perceptions between groups and decrease prejudice.
what is a strength of realistic conflict theory?
Sherif's Robbers Cave study showed that competition increased prejudice.
how did cooperation affect prejudice in the Robbers Cave study?
When boys worked together, prejudice decreased.
what does the Robbers Cave study demonstrate?
It shows that competition leads to prejudice and cooperation reduces it.
what is a weakness of realistic conflict theory?
Tajfel’s study showed that competition is not necessary for prejudice to occur.
what did Tajfel’s study demonstrate?
It showed that simply forming groups (a "minimal group") is enough for discrimination to occur.
what does Tajfel’s study suggest?
Conflict isn’t required for discrimination to happen — grouping itself can cause prejudice.
