Among the Helvetii, by far the most noble and richest was Orgetorix. He, led on by a desire for kingship, formed a conspiracy of the nobility. For he desired the sovereignty of all Gaul.

The Helvetii are confined on all sides by the nature of the location: on one side by the river Rhine, very broad and deep, which divides the Helvetii from the Germans; on another side by the very high Mount Jura, which divides the Sequani from the Helvetii; on a third side by Lake Geneva and the river Rhône, which divides our province from the Helvetii.

With many wars having been completed, the Belgians having been overcome, the Germans having been driven out, the Seduni in the Alps having been conquered, Caesar was thinking that Gaul was pacified. And so, at the beginning of winter, he set out for Illyricum, for he wished to visit those nations also and to become acquainted with the regions. However, a sudden war arose in Gaul. This was the cause of that war. Publius Crassus with the seventh legion was wintering among the Andes, nearest to the Ocean, but in these places there was a scarcity of grain. And so he sent many prefects and military tribunes into the neighboring states for the sake of grain.
