Cultural Awareness
The ability and willingness to investigate and understand the differences between the nurse’s own culture and others.
Implicit Bias
Involuntary attitudes or associations that unconsciously impact our perceptions, actions, decisions, and interactions with others.
Cultural Competence
The ability to incorporate effective nursing care with both emic and etic knowledge, respecting all cultural influences, beliefs, customs, and values.
Health Disparities
Health outcomes that differ among certain populations or vulnerable groups compared to those in the majority.
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
Factors that impact a person's health, quality of life, and personal well-being, contributing to health disparities.
Health Equity
Attaining the highest level of health for all individuals.
Health Equality
The distribution of the same resources and opportunities to all individuals within a population.
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Service (CLAS) standards
A blueprint for healthcare organizations to advance health equity and eliminate healthcare disparities.
Vulnerable Populations
Groups of people at higher risk for poor health outcomes due to barriers to social, economic, and environmental resources.
