Lactic Acid Fermentation

Occurs in bacteria and muscle fibres that use a lot of ATP and are unable to keep up with demand (needs more oxygen then your body can supply)

2
New cards

Lactic acid fermentation steps

  • Lowers the pH inside the muscles

  • polar molecule that causes muscle fibres to swell due to hydration

  • water from blood enters muscle cells

  • after exercise, lactate is oxidized back to pyruvate by the liver, which then goes through krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation

3
New cards

Alchohol fermentation

  • ccurs in yeast cells

  • end products are Ethyl alchohol and carbon dioxide

  • used to create beer, bread, soy sauce

example: bread - CO2 allows for the bread to rise and Ethanol causes the sweet smell
