Define Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
Conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of CURRENT BEST EVIDENCE in making clinically relevant decisions about the care of individual patients.
3 essential components of EBP

Best Evidence
Clinical Expertise
Identify and categorize drug & disease background questions
Background question: general knowledge about a medical condition or drug therapy.
Has 2 parts:
Question root with a verb (who, what, where, why, how)
Disorder or aspect of a disease or drug
E.g., What are the complications of stroke? What is the mechanism of action of x?
Primary reference
Original papers / articles, published and unpublished studies or reports in journals.
Pros: detailed, current
Cons: may be misled, time consuming to read
Secondary reference
Indexing and abstracting services.
Pro: rapid access to specific topics, with abstract
Con: lag time b/w publishing and indexing
Tertiary reference
Textbooks, full-text online information databases.
Pros: review of literature, simple to use
Cons: bias introduced, lack of depth, out of date info
