Force
push or a pull on an object. The SI unit of measurement is the Newton (N). Represented by an arrow showing direction and strength /magnitude
Work
When force causes an object to MOVE in the DIRECTION of the force. Measured in Joules
Newton
unit of measurement for force in the metric system; measured with a spring scale
Joule
unit of measurement for work equal to the work done by a force of one newton (N) acting through a distance of one meter (M)
Motion
change in position started by a force.
Gravity
The force of attraction between two objects. More mass = more gravity. Less mass = less gravity. Gravity keeps planets orbiting the sun. Less distance = more gravity, more distance = less gravity.
Mass
amount of stuff in something. More mass = more gravity.
Friction
force that resists motion between two objects that are touching; Opposing parallel forces, rubbing.
Spring Scale
piece of equipment used to
measure force
Energy
The ability to do work. Can cannot be created nor destroyed. Energy can be transformed from one type to another (thermal/heat, chemical/food, mechanical/kinetic/motion, potential/stored)
Distance
Length from one point to another, can be measured in meters
Newton's 3rd Law
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Balanced Forces
forces acting on an object in opposite directions combine and form a net force of zero
Unbalanced Forces
forces acting on an object that combine to form a net force that is not zero, changes an object's motion
Force Pairs
forces always come in pairs, action-reaction
Net Force
The combination of all forces acting on an object
