What happens during Redox?
Electrons are transferred from one reactant to another reactant. Occurs with a metal and non-metal
Oxidation number for Lone element (diatomics)
ox = 0
Oxidation number for Ionic compounds
is = match ionic charge
What is a redox reaction?
The reactant oxidation numbers are different than the oxidation numbers of the product side.
What occurs in a redox reaction?
one reactant is oxidized, the other is reduced
OIL RIG
Oxidation is the loss of electrons. Reduction is the gain of electrons. These always occur together.
Types of Redox reactions
Combination (can be)
Decomposition (can be)
Single replacement (usually)
Combustion (always redox)
