Tanks
Storage units used to hold water when the public water supply cannot provide the quantity needed for fire protection.
Elevated tank
A common tank type that uses a gravity feed and is supported on steel towers.
Surface tank
A common tank type that operates in conjunction with a fire pump.
Confined spaces
Areas, including tanks, that require proper training, equipment, and supervision for entry.
NFPA 22
Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection, providing requirements for tank construction.
Embankment-supported rubberized fabric tanks
Flexible tanks that utilize the contour of an embankment to provide a predesigned shape.
Cylindrical/Spherical tanks
The most efficient shapes for obtaining strength from a given amount of material.
Rectilinear tank
A tank shape, such as an NFPA 13D residential plastic tank, designed to minimize floor space rather than optimize construction.
AHJ
The Authority Having Jurisdiction, which approves the type, capacity, location, and foundations of a tank.
Gravity feed
The mechanism that allows elevated tanks to provide water automatically whether electricity is on or off.
Wind and seismic loads
Forces that engineers must account for when designing the steel towers used to support elevated tanks.
