What does the integumentary system do?
Covers & protects body; synthesizes Vitamin D, helps regulate heat, contains sensory receptors
What are sebaceous glands and their function?
Oil glands that make sebum
What are sudoriferous glands and their function?
Sweat glands that make sweat
What is keratin and what does it do?
A protein that makes the epidermis rough and waterproof
What is melanin?
The pigment that gives skin and hair color.
Describe a 1st Degree Burn
Damages epidermis causing reddening and pain
Describe a 2nd Degree Burn
Damaged epidermis and upper dermis causing reddening, pain, and blisters
Describe a 3rd Degree Burn
Damages all layers (epidermis, dermis, & hypodermis) blackening, no pain (nerve receptors damaged); Full thickness burn.
