Router
Device used for connecting different networks and routing packets from one network to another.
Inter networking
Communicating between different networks, made possible with routers.
Default Gateway
The point connecting a LAN to a router, used as the forwarding point for packets going outside the LAN.
Cisco Packet Tracer
A free software used for doing practical networking practice and simulations.
MAC Address Table
A table constructed by a switch to forward packets efficiently via unicasting.
Attachment Unit Interface (AUI)
A port on a router used for connecting to a LAN.
Serial Ports
Ports on a router (S0, S1) used for WAN connectivity, connecting router to router.
Console Port
A port on a router used for doing programmability and configurations.
Fixed End Routers
Routers with a fixed number of ports that cannot be expanded (e.g., Cisco 2501).
Modular Routers
Routers with slots for adding modules, allowing for scalability by adding or removing ports as needed.
Scalability
The ability to add or remove modules in a modular router as per requirement.
Internetwork Operating System (IOS)
The operating system used on Cisco switches and routers.
Access Point (AP)
A device, often used at home, to provide wireless connectivity; sometimes called Access Router.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
A server that automatically allocates IP addresses to clients in a network.
Firewall
A device or software that protects a network from malicious traffic (viruses, malware, etc.).
