Myeloid lineage
This gives rise to red blood cells and innate immune cells
Lymphoid lineage
This gives rise to B-cells and T-cells
Neutrophil
This is a type of cell composing the majority of white blood cells. Highly phagocytic, and found mostly in blood
Mast cell
This is a type of cell found on the lining of mucosal surfaces that release granules to attract white blood cells
Monocyte
This is a type of immune cell present in blood. Low phagocytosis
Dendritic cell
This is a type of immune cell found in low numbers in blood, and exterior-contact tissue. Can trigger adaptive immune responses
Pathogen-associated molecular pattern
This describes constituent elements of pathogens that are shared across multiple pathogenic microbes, and can be recognised by the immune system
Pattern-recognition receptor
This is a type of receptor that allows for recognition of PAMPs
Toll-like receptor
This is a type of transmembrane receptor on the surface of phagocytic cells that recognises PAMPs on pathogens
Phagolysosome
This is a type of lysosome inside phagocytic cells that breaks down pathogens
