Conflict
The behavior that occurs when two parties perceive that they have incompatible goals, ideas, or behavior.
What Conflict Looks Like
Does not necessarily involve fighting; can include bickering, arguing, or even silence.
Causes of Conflict
Individuals have different needs, values, attitudes, and beliefs. Conflict can occur when these are challenged as beliefs that ideas, goals, and behaviors are incompatible.
Mirror-Image Perceptions
Negative and distorted images that parties in conflict form of each other that are surprisingly similar.
Solutions to Conflict
Solutions are outcomes between two parties with incompatible views.
Imposed Solution
A 'dictated solution' where a stronger party imposes a solution, leading to one party winning and the other losing.
Distributive Solution
Involves compromise or mutual concessions, where both parties get only a portion of what they want, leading to neither being 100% satisfied.
Integrative Solution
A win-win solution where both sides benefit from the decision reached by addressing each party's motives, values, and goals.
Communication Techniques
A technique to resolve conflict that involves parties talking to each other through communication.
Counselling
A technique for resolving conflict that gives people the skills to resolve conflicts on their own through discussion of needs and motives, leading to distributive and integrative solutions.
Negotiation
A technique for resolving conflict that involves compromise to arrive at a distributive solution, or successful negotiation to arrive at an integrative solution.
Mediation and Arbitration
Techniques for resolving conflict that involve a third party that assists in discussions between parties to come to a solution on their own or dictates a solution after hearing needs of both parties.
Pro-social
Intentional behavior that helps or provides assistance.
Anti-social
Behaviours that are disruptive or harmful to people wellbeing or property.
