interphase

period of the cell cycle between cell divisions

mitosis

part of the cell cycle during which the cell nucleus divides

prophase

the first and longest phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes become visible and preparation for the rest of mitosis takes place

metaphase

the second phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes line up across the middle of the cell

anaphase

the third phase of mitosis, during which the chromosome pairs separate and move toward opposite poles

telophase

the last phase of mitosis; distinct individual chromosomes separate into two different nuclei

cytokinesis

division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells

photosynthesis

the process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches

cellular respiration

The process that releases energy (ATP) by breaking down food molecules (glucose).
