Media Conventions and Camera Shots

Conventions

A standard or norm that acts as a rule governing behavior; generally established and accepted ways of doing something.

Form Conventions

Certain ways of what we expect for the types of media's codes to be arranged, such as a title at a film's start, news on a paper's front page, or a tutorial at a game's beginning.

Cut In

Cutting into a closer shot to which our subject or character is looking at something in his hand or in the ground.

Cut Away

A shot that focuses and zooms into something our character looks over and is looking at.

Over the Shoulder

Looking over the shoulder of one subject to the other displaying their engagement in the conversation.

Single

Focuses on one person, showing only the speaker to give them emphasis.

Medium Shot

Focuses on the subject from hips up, allowing us to see one half of our character.

Medium Close Up

From chest up focusing on the character, a tighter shot of the medium of full shot.

Close Over the Shoulder

Shot that gives emphasis on the character who is talking to give an extra effect of suspense or something else to happen.
