it was a scam

The Trial was a publicity stunt to bring attention and business to a small rural town in Tennessee​

​It is not entirely clear if Scopes ever actually taught evolution to his students​

Business interests in the town approached Scopes and asked him if he would be willing to be arrested and tried for violating the Butler act

results of the trial

  • Scopes was convicted and fined $100 which was overturned by the statesupreme court​

  • The law itself was upheld and was not repealed until 1967​

  • Scopes was forever known as the defendant in the trial and endured avariety of types of harassment over the course of his life​

  • Bryan died from a heart attack several days after the conclusion of the trialin Dayton​

  • The trial did little to settle the debate between science and creationism​

  • By 1927 13 states had some form of law prohibiting the teaching ofevolution in schools

  • While this may be true there is no way to test this experimentally. Therefore, it is not a scientific explanation​

  • In 2005 parents in Dover Pa. sued the school district for requiring a statement to be read in science classes saying ID was an alternative to evolution. The parents won and ID was no longer taught in schools
