People are most motivated to do things when one or more of these basic needs are met: Relatedness (Connection), Competence (Mastery), Autonomy
External Regulation (Controlled Motivation)
Behavior is driven by external rewards and punishments
Introjected Regulation (Controlled Motivation)
Behavior is driven by internal pressures, such as guilt or the desire for approval
Identified Regulation (More Self-Determined)
Behavior is personally valued and seen as important, though still somewhat externally motivated
Integrated Regulation (Self-Determined)
Behavior is fully aligned with personal goals and values, becoming part of the individual’s identity
Intrinsic Regulation (Fully Self-Determined)
Behavior is engaged in purely for the inherent enjoyment and satisfaction it brings
