Endocrine glands

Hypothalamus
Master center of endocrine system in the brain; regulates hunger, thirst, sleep, and body temp.; produces releasing hormones that stimulate the pituitary gland.
Pituitary
Controls all of the other endocrine glands besides hypothalamus; influences growth and metabolism; has anterior pituitary and posterior pitutary.
Anterior pituitary
Secretes FSH, LH, TSH, GH, ACTH, PRL
Posterior pituitary
Releases oxytocin (stimulates labor, milk let down) and vasopressin (antidiauretic)
Thyroid
Located in neck; produces T3 and T4, control growth, regulation of metabolic rate, key in metamorphosis
Parathyroids
Two pairs of small glands, secretes PTH which controls calcium levels in the blood
Adrenals
located on top of the kidneys, under control of ATCH, Cortex: produces corticosterones, medulla: produces epinephrine and norepinephrin
Pancreas
Porduces insulin and glucagon; insulin: increases glucose levels in cells; glucagon: releases glucose to the bloodstream
Pineal gland
located in the brain, produces hormone melatonin (negatively light sensitive), responsible for daily and sesonal hypothermia in lizards
Ovaries
Under control of FSH and LH and produce female reproductive hormones (estradiol, progesterone, relaxin)
Testes
controlled by FSH and LH, produce male reproductive hormones, androgens (testosterone
Hypothalamic-Pituitary axis
receptors around body sense changes in the environment, send the info to the brain, trigger hypothalamus to secrete to pituitary, pituitary then secretes hormones to other endocrine tissues (HPA and HPG axises)
