Bill of Rights

1st Amendment

freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition + prohibits Congress from making laws that infringe upon these rights.

2nd Amendment

protects the right to keep and bear arms

3rd Amendment

prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent during peacetime

4th Amendment

protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, requiring a warrant based on probable cause

5th Amendment

provides for the right to due process, protects against self-incrimination, and prohibits double jeopardy + the govt cannot take your property without compensation

6th Amendment

ensures the right to a fair and speedy trial, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to counsel

7th Amendment

guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases and prevents re-examination of facts tried by a jury

8th Amendment

prohibits excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment

9th Amendment

the rights of citizens will be protected whether these rights are listed or not

10th Amendment

reserves powers not delegated to the federal government to the states or the people
