Parallelism
Editing that moves back and forth between two or more storylines that occur simultaneously and allows for a comparison between two different situations. Shows relative speed
Continuity
Most common type of editing, emphasizes smoothness, feels uninterrupted, emulates real like and shows the passage of time, perspective. Suspension of disbelief is when the audience forgets they are watching a film. Sequencing in a logical progression
Auteur Theory
Director is the sole creative force behind the film and has a recognizable aesthetic stamp of style.
Diagetic Sound
Sound that exists in the world of the film. It doesn’t need to be seen but does require a logical reason to be there. Both the audience and the characters in the scene can hear it.
Cinematography
Describes what the camera does and how it moves
Non Diagetic Sound
Sound that exists outside the specific scene we are watching or outside the film. The characters in the scene cannot hear it.
Montage
Moves from continuity to conflict and shots collide with one another and we see a connection between them. Emphasizes the meaning and produces a metaphor. Juxtaposition of two different things are linked together to make a third thing.
Ellipses
Any inferred time and space between shots. Relies on the audience to assume that events and distance take place in between shots. Relies on mise-en-scene of the book ending shots to indicate how much time and space has passed.
Mise-en-scene
Addresses what we can see and how it has been shown to us. Includes anything that is visible in the shot
Shots
A continuous view through the camera that is uninterrupted. it is the basic unit of meaning for film narrative. Three types are close up, mid shot, and wide shot.
