What are the five components of language?
Phonology, Morphology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics
Phonology
Actual sound of language; there are 40 phenomes in english (speech sounds); ability to perceive phenomes is categorical perception, and is one of the first aspects of language children learn
Morphology
Structure of words; morphemes are building blocks of words
Semantics
Meaning of a word
Syntax
Refers to how words are put together
Pragmatics
Dependence of language on context (being friendly/casual with someone you know versus being formal with a stranger)
