Old Testament (OT)
First part of the Christian Bible; contains writings from before the New Testament.
Hebrew Bible
Sacred Scriptures of Judaism; overlaps with the Christian OT but is organized differently.
Ancient Near East (ANE)
Ancient region where Israel and surrounding civilizations existed.
Wisdom
Knowledge and understanding about how to live well and faithfully.
Inspiration
God's involvement in the creation of Scripture through human authors.
General Revelation
God revealed through creation, nature, and the world around us.
Special Revelation
God revealing himself in specific ways through people, events, and Scripture.
Oral Tradition
Stories and teachings passed down by speaking before being written.
Canon
The collection of writings accepted as authoritative Scripture.
Torah
Law / Instruction; first major section of the Hebrew Bible.
Nevi'im
Prophets; the second major section of the Hebrew Bible.
Kethuvim / Ketuvim
Writings; the third major section of the Hebrew Bible.
Hermeneutics
The study and process of interpreting Scripture or other texts.
Patriarchal
A society or family structure centered around the male head of the family.
Kinsman Redeemer
A close relative who helps protect or restore a family member, property, or family line.
Dictation View of Inspiration
The view that God gives the writer the exact words to write.
Dynamic View of Inspiration
The view that God inspires the message while working through the human author's personality, culture, vocabulary, and experiences.
Intuition View of Inspiration
The view that biblical writers possess exceptional religious or spiritual insight.
Old Testament Formation Sequence
The progression of Scripture development: Events / Experiences -> Oral Tradition -> Written Texts -> Collection / Editing -> Canon.
Patriarchs Era
First era of the seven eras; covers Abraham and his descendants (Isaac, Jacob) and covenant promises.
Exodus / Conquest Era
Second era of the seven eras; Israel leaves slavery in Egypt under Moses and moves toward/into the Promised Land.
Judges Era
Third era of the seven eras; features a repeated cycle of disobedience, oppression, crying out to God, rescue by a judge/deliverer, and repetition.
United Monarchy Era
Fourth era of the seven eras; Israel is one kingdom under kings (Saul, David, Solomon).
Divided Kingdom Era
Fifth era of the seven eras; the united kingdom splits into northern and southern kingdoms.
Exile Era
Sixth era of the seven eras; foreign powers conquer God's people and many are removed from their homeland.
Return / Restoration Era
Seventh era of the seven eras; exiles return and rebuild their community.
