Pulsed Wave (PW) Doppler Beam Steering
The beam should be steered with respect to the angle of the vessel.
Sample Volume/Gate Placement
Should be placed in the center of the vessel with the "arms" parallel to flow.
PW Tools
Includes steer, SV/gate, and angle correct.
Spectral Analysis Tools
Includes gain, scale, baseline, and calipers.
Scale Setting
Should be set so that the entire waveform can be visualized.
Baseline Setting
Ideally set high enough to allow some space below the waveform.
Acoustic Window
The clear space visualized under a waveform if the vessel is normal; no spectral broadening should be present.
Spectral Broadening
The loss of the acoustic window in a Doppler waveform.
PSV
Peak Systolic Velocity; a measurement derived from spectral analysis.
EDV
End Diastolic Velocity; a measurement derived from spectral analysis.
Angle Correct
A tool used to align the Doppler cursor with the direction of flow, often set to 60o.
SV/Gate Size
The longitudinal dimension of the sample volume, with examples in the notes ranging from 0.5mm to 3.0mm.
