What is kinesthesis?
The conscious awareness of the position and movement of the body in space
What are proprioceptors and where are they located?
Internal receptors in skin, joints, muscles, and tendons that provide feedback about muscle tension, length, contraction, body/limb position, and joint movement
What is proprioception?
A subconscious mechanism that regulates posture and movement by responding to proprioceptor stimuli in joints, tendons, muscles, and inner ear
How does kinesthesis impact proprioception?
Through muscle memory, conscious awareness can strengthen subconscious control
What is balance?
Physical equilibrium caused by equal weight distribution on either side of the body’s axis
Why is balance easier on a stable surface?
The x-axis is not fighting against the body’s balance
Why is balance harder on an unstable surface?
The body must stabilize along both x- and y-axe
Define walking
Movement at a slower pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn; both feet never off the ground at the same time
Define jogging
A cross between walking and running
Define running
Rapid movement; both feet off the ground at some point during the gait cycle
Define sprinting
Intense running, only sustainable for brief periods
Define skipping
Forward momentum; lagging leg driven vertically while pushing off stabilizing leg; both feet off ground at the movement’s peak
Define karaoke-ing
Lateral movement by crossing feet in front and behind one another while moving sideways
What are Fundamental Movement Skills?
Specific gross motor skills using different body parts; building blocks for complex skills
List all 12 examples of fundamental movement skills
Run, Jump, Gallop, Side slide, Hop, Skip, Leap, Catch, Kick, Strike a stationary ball, Overarm throw, Underarm throw
What is Functional Movement Screening?
Observable testing of locomotion, manipulation, and stabilization movements
