Appointed as Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and rallied Arabs/ Muslims against concessions to the Jews.

British White Paper and Royal Commission (1930)

Recommended limiting Jewish immigration.

The Black Hand (1930-35)

Islamist group led by Sheikh Izz al-Din al-Qassam that launched a campaign of violence against the Jewish community and British rule.

Arab Revolt (1936-39)

Began with a general strike in Jaffa; suppressed by Britain with martial law.

1947 United Nations Partition Plan

Recommended partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states.

British White Paper of 1939

Limited Jewish immigration into Palestine.

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)

Established in 1964 by the Arab League under Ahmad Shukeiri.

Six-Day War (1967)

Led to Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights, and Sinai.

Black September (1970)

Clashes between PLO and Jordanian forces, driving the PLO into exile in southern Lebanon.

Yom Kippur/Ramadan War (1973)

Israel raids PLO bases in Beirut and southern Lebanon before and during the war.

Camp David Accords (1978)

Operation Cast Lead (2008)

Israel launches invasion of Gaza to stop Hamas and other militant groups firing rockets into Israel.
