Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
The number of beats per minute the heart normally beats when the body is at rest.
Anticipatory response
The increase in heart rate above resting levels just before the start of exercise.
Maximum Heart Rate (HRmax)
The highest heart rate achieved during all-out effort to volitional fatigue.
Steady-state Heart Rate
The stable heart rate achieved after several minutes of exercise at a given intensity.
Stroke Volume (SV)
The amount of blood ejected by the heart with each beat.
Preload
The end-diastolic ventricular stretch, which affects stroke volume.
Cardiac Output (Q)
The volume of blood the heart pumps per minute, calculated as Q = HR x SV.
Fick Principle
A principle that states VO2 = Q x (a-v)O2 difference, explaining how oxygen consumption is calculated.
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
The average blood pressure in a person's arteries during one cardiac cycle.
Blood Flow Redistribution
The process of redirecting blood flow to areas with the greatest metabolic need during exercise.
