What is a population?
All the organisms of one species living in a habitat

What is a community?
All the different populations that live together in a habitat

What is biodiversity?
the variety of life in the world, or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.

What is species richness?
measure of the number of different species in a community

Why is species richness not a good measure of biodiversity?
Does not take into account population sizes of each species
(species evenness)
What is an index of diversity?
Describes the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species
Describe what each of the variables in the index of diversity equation means
d = N(N − 1) / Σn(n − 1)
N = total number of organisms of all species
n = total number of organisms of each species

How do farming techniques reduce biodiversity?
Removal of woodland and hedgerows
Monoculture e.g. replace natural meadows with one type of crop
Use of pesticides
- kill pest and non-pest species, reducing species of insects
Use of herbicides: reduce species of plants, lowering species of insects, so fewer food sources for other species

What techniques can be used to increase biodiversity?
get farmers to plant more hedgerows
protect species by law
restrict urban development in biodiverse areas
