Extinction
Withholding or discontinuing reinforcement for previously reinforced behavior.
Reinforcement
A process that increases the likelihood of a behavior by providing a stimulus after the behavior occurs.
Punishment
A consequence that decreases the likelihood of a behavior by introducing an adverse stimulus or removing a pleasant stimulus.
Functional Extinction
Extinction where the intervention matches the function of the behavior.
Procedural Extinction
Extinction where a behavior is ignored without considering its function.
Assessment
The process of evaluating an individual's behavior to identify its function.
Escape Behavior
Behavior exhibited to avoid or escape an aversive stimulus.
Tangibles
Items or objects that can be given as rewards or reinforcers.
Extinction Burst
A temporary increase in behavior when extinction is first implemented.
Response Variation
The occurrence of new behaviors when an established response is put on extinction.
Spontaneous Recovery
The sudden reemergence of an extinct behavior after its decrease.
Resurgence
When a previously reinforced behavior reappears due to the discontinuation of a replacement behavior.
Resistance to Extinction
The difficulty in stopping a behavior that has been reinforced consistently over time.
Stakeholders
Individuals involved in the treatment process, such as parents or caregivers, who must understand and implement interventions.
Differential Reinforcement
A strategy that involves reinforcing a desirable behavior while putting an undesired behavior on extinction.
