Short Term

1. Brain chemistry changes - addictive properties of NICOTINE cause the body

to crave more, having withdrawal symptoms such as headaches 30 minutes after the last cigarette use.

2. Sense of taste dulled and appetite goes down.

3. Respiration and heart rate increases - breathing during physical activity becomes very difficult.

4. Second hand smoke - people around cigarette smoke regularly can suffer from lung damage (ex. Kids of smokers or friends of smokers)

Long Term

1. Lung cancer - 90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. If you get lung cancer you have a 1 in 5 chance fo being alive in 5 years. It is the deadliest cancer in the world.

2. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) - A lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. It will get to a point where someone will have to be on an oxygen tank all the time and will have to stay home.

3. Stroke - Smoking cigarettes affects every organ in the body in a negative way. A stroke happens when there is a lack of blood flow to the brain. Cigarette smoke can cause blockages in the body’s blood flow.
