Simple Squamous Epithelium
Location: The alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs, Kidney glomeruli, Lining blood vessels, Lining body membranes. Function: Gas exchange (diffusion), Filtration of blood, Secretion of fluid.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Location: The ducts of glands, Kidney tubules, The ovaries. Function: Secretion of products, Absorption of fluids.
Non-Ciliated Simple Columnar Epithelium
Location: GI Tract (stomach, small intestine, large intestine). Function: Absorption of nutrients, Secretion of enzymes/mucus.
Ciliated Simple Columnar Epithelium
Location: Bronchiole tubes, Fallopian tubes. Function: Movement of mucus & foreign objects out of throat, Movement of eggs to uterus.
Ciliated Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Location: Trachea, Upper respiratory tract. Function: Secretion of mucus, Propulsion of mucus & foreign objects out of throat.
Non-keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Location: Lining of the mouth and esophagus, Lining of the vagina. Function: Protection against abrasion, water loss, & microbe invasion.
Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Location: The epidermis (the superficial layer of the skin). Function: Protection against abrasion, water loss, UV radiation, & microbes.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Location: Sweat glands, Mammary glands. Function: Secretion & absorption.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Location: Salivary glands, The pharynx, The male urethra. Function: Secretion, Protection against abrasion.
Transitional Epithelium
Location: Urinary bladder, Ureters, Urethra. Function: Allows organs to stretch, Protective lining (protects bladder from urine).
Areolar Loose Connective Tissue
Location: Papillary layer of the dermis, Around organs. Function: Wraps organs, Cushions organs.
Adipose Loose Tissue
Location: Subcutaneous layer of the skin (the hypodermis), Yellow bone marrow, Around the kidneys. Function: Energy reserve, Prevents heat loss, Supports & protects organs.
Reticular Loose Connective Tissue
Location: Lymph nodes, Spleen, Bone marrow. Function: Filters & removes old blood cells or microbes, Shapes organs.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Location: Tendons, Ligaments. Function: Attachment, Withstands pulling.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Location: Reticular layer of the dermis, Surrounding organs. Function: Provides strength in multiple directions.
Dense Elastic Connective Tissue
Location: Walls of large arteries, Trachea & bronchial tubes. Function: Returns organs to shape after stretching.
Hyaline Cartilage Connective Tissue
Location: Embryonic & fetal skeleton, At the end of long bones, Costal cartilage, Nose, trachea & larynx. Function: Provides a smooth surface for movement, Cushions and resists compression stress, Provides flexibility & support.
Fibrocartilage Connective Tissue
Location: Intervertebral discs, Pubic symphysis, Discs of the knee joint. Function: Absorbing shock, Joining structures together.
Elastic Cartilage Connective Tissue
Location: The external ear, The epiglottis. Function: Maintains the shape of structures.
Bone Connective Tissue
Location: Compact bone - on the outside of boney structures; Spongy bone - inside boney structures. Function: Supports & protects body organs, Enables movement, Stores bone marrow.
Blood Connective Tissue
Location: Inside blood vessels. Function: Transports respiratory gases, nutrients, & wastes; Enables blood clotting.
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Location: Skeletal muscles. Function: Motion, Posture, Heat production.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Location: The wall of the heart. Function: Pumps blood to the rest of the body.
Smooth Muscle Tissue
Location: Walls of hollow internal organs (like the GI tract, urinary tract, blood vessels, etc.). Function: Movement of substances (like food, urine, blood, etc.).
Neurons
Location: Brain, spinal cord, & nerves. Function: Send electrical signals.
Neuroglia
Location: Brain, spinal cord, & nerves. Function: Provide structural support for neurons, Protect & nourish neurons.
