Amino-acid based hormones
Most hormones, these are water soluble. With the exception of thyroid hormones, they exert their effects through the second-messenger systems
Steps of cAMP signaling
1) Hormone binds to receptor
2) Receptor activates a G protein
3) G protein activates/inhibits effector enzyme (adenylate cyclase)
4) Adcyc converts ATP to cAMP
5) cAMP activates kinase (phosphorylating protein). Effect on the cell determined by kinase prote Afterwards, cAMP is very quickly degraded by the enzyme phosphodiesterase. Produces massive cascade effect.
Oxytocin and ADH
These are small peptide hormones
Oxytocin
Released during childbirth and breast feeding, strong positive feedback loop hormone. It uses the PIP2+ secondary messenger system. It is inhibited by stress and lack of appropriate stimuli.
ADH
Secreted by high blood osmolarity
What three factors determine the degree of target cell activation?
