Anne Hutchinson
1591-1643- Puritan woman who disagreed with the Puritan Church in Massachusetts, banished for questioning authority & gender roles, and helped to form Rhode Island.
Bacon's Rebellion
1676 - A leader (Nathaniel Bacon) and West Virginia settlers got mad at Gov William Berkley for trying to appease local Indians instead of fighting & driving them out (Doeg Indians had attacked before). His army burned down Jamestown but failed because the leaders were killed.
Benjamin Franklin
1706-790- American intellectual, inventor, author, scientist, and politician. Created Poor Richard's Almanac. Helped negotiate with the French for support during the American Revolution, was one of the founding fathers, and helped make the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.
Christopher Columbus
1451-1506- Italian navigator who discovered the New World (October 12, 1492) for Spain (Under Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain) while looking for a route to China.
Church of England
1534- The Pope wouldn't let Henry divorce his wife, so Henry VIII declared himself head of the church.
Colombian Exchange
15th-16th Centuries- How Indians got horses and Europe got corn
Counter Reformation
16th-17th Centuries- Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation. Began with the Council of Trent and ended with the Thirty Years War. They tried to fix the Church's errors and make it stronger.
Encomiendas
Labor system over the American Indians in the Spanish colonies so Spanish settlers can Christianize the Indians.
Indentured Servants
Colonists who got a free ride to North America in return for working without pay for a certain number of years.
Joint-Stock Company
1600s- Company where investors would invest stocks for profits. Companies would invest money into expeditions to the New World as England was broke. 1606 King James I authorizes the Virginia Company to charter settlers to Jamestown.
Plymouth
1620- Colony settled by the Pilgrims. It eventually merged with Massachusetts Bay colony. This is the departing point for the Mayflower.
Predestination
Calvin's idea that God has already planned out a person's fate; Divine foreshadowing
Protestant Reformation
1517- A religious movement that wanted to reform the Roman Catholic Church and led to the creation of Protestant churches. It questioned the Church's practices and the Pope's authority.
Puritans
Calvinist religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay. They were persecuted in England. Their morals are the basis of American ideals.
Renaissance
14th Century- Means rebirth; following the Middle Ages, a movement on the revival of interest in the classical learning of Greece and Rome started. It had humanistic ideals. It originated in Italy.
