Mendeleev
Russian chemist who created the first widely accepted periodic table and predicted the properties of undiscovered elements.
Periods
Horizontal rows in the periodic table representing electron energy levels.
Groups
Vertical columns in the periodic table containing elements with similar properties.
Metals
Elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, and have a shiny luster.
Nonmetals
Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity, brittle when solid, and many are gases at room temperature.
Metalloids
Elements with properties intermediate between metals and nonmetals; often used as semiconductors.
Alkali Metals
Highly reactive elements in Group 1A that explode in water and do not exist freely in nature.
Noble Gases
Elements in Group 8A characterized by a perfect electron configuration and high stability.
Big Four Elements
Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen which make up 96% of the human body mass.
Semiconductors
Materials that have properties of both metals and nonmetals; essential for electronics and computer chips.
Chemical Predictions
Using the periodic table's patterns to anticipate the properties and behavior of elements.
What year did chemistry get organized and who organized it?
1869; Mendeleev
