Fire Hose
A flexible tube used by firefighters to transport water from a source to extinguish fires. Fire hoses come in various diameters and lengths, designed to withstand high pressure. Attack and Supply hoses.
Hose size.
The inside diameter of the hose when it is filled with water and under pressure. Fire hose ranges in size from ¾ to 6 inches.
Small diameter hose (SDH)
Is either 1 ½ inches (38mm) or 1 ¾ inches (44mm) hose and is most often used as the primary attack hose for most fires. Both sizes use the same 1 ½ inches (38mm) couplings. Usually comes in 50 foot lengths.
1 ½ inch hose line (38mm)
Can flow between 100 and 200 gallons per minute (GPM).
1 ¾ inch hose line. (44mm)
Can flow between 150 and 250 gallons per minute (GPM).
Medium diameter hose (MDH)
2 ½ inches (64mm) and 3 inches (76mm).
2 ½ inch (64mm) hoseline.
Used as an attack hose for fires that are too large to be controlled by a 1 ½ inch (38mm) or 1 ¾ inch (44mm).
Delivers a flow of approximately 250 gallons per minute (GPM).
Most often used for interior attacks in large buildings and for exterior attacks.
Usually comes in 50-ft (15 m) lengths.
3 inch (76mm) hoseline.
Used as both attack and supply hose.
When used as an attack hose, the 3 inch (76mm) hose is used to deliver water to master stream appliances, which are devices that discharge between 350 GPM and 1500 GPM.

Construction.
Inner water proof liner surrounded by one or multiple outer layer or reinforcements. Outer layer is commonly referred to as the jacket.
Single jacket hose: Constructed with one layer of woven fiber.
Multiple-jacket hose: Constructed with two or more layers of woven fibers.
Large diameter hose (LDH).
Diameter of 3 ½ inches (89mm) or more.
4 inches (101mm)
5 inches (127mm)
Most are constructed as supply hose.
6 inches (152mm). Largest LDH.
Commonly available in standard lengths of 100ft.
Suction hose
Used to connect the intake side of a fire pump to a hydrant or to a static water source.
Two types: Soft sleeve hose and hard suction hose.
Soft sleeve hose (Soft suction hose).
A short section (10 to 25 ft) of LDH used to transport water from a pressurized source, such as a fire hydrant, to the intake side of the fire pump.
Hard suction hose.
A short section of rigid fire hose that is used to draft water from a static water source.
Normally comes in 10 ft. (PFD carries 2 which totals 20 ft)
In the PFD they are used for drafting from a water source, terrorist attacks, second alarms to ensure that the hose line does not collapse.
Preconnected attack line (Preconnect)
Come in lengths ranging from 150 t0 350 ft. These travel on the engine already equipped with a nozzle and connected to a pump discharge outlet so they are ready for immediate use.
In engine 43, we have 4 lengths and 7 lengths with the minute man lay.

Booster hose (Booster line)
1 inch (25mm) diameter, non collapsible, rubber covered hose usually carried on a hose reel that holds 150 to 200 ft of hose.

Straight or Storage hose roll.
Used for general handling and transportation of hose as well as to prepare hose to be stored on a rack.
- The male coupling is at the center of the roll, and female coupling is at the outside of the roll.

Single-doughnut hose roll.
Used when the hose will be put into use directly from its rolled state.
Both couplings are on the outside of the roll, and the rolled hose can be connected and extended by one firefighter.
The threads of the male coupling are protected by the hose rolled on top of it.

Twin-doughnut hose roll
Is used primarily to make a small compact roll that can be carried easily. This roll can be carried by hand, by a rope, or by webbing.

Self-locking twin-doughnut hose roll
Similar to the twin-doughnut roll, except that it forms its own carry loop.
