Missouri Compromise (1820)
A legislative agreement that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, while establishing a boundary for slavery at the 36°30′ parallel.
Compromise of 1850
A series of laws that admitted California as a free state, allowed popular sovereignty in the New Mexico and Utah territories, ended the slave trade in Washington D.C., and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act.
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
Legislation that created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allowed for popular sovereignty, leading to violent conflict known as 'Bleeding Kansas'.
Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)
