Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space

Elements

Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

Compounds

Substances made from two or more different elements chemically combined.

Mixture

Physical combinations of two or more different elements chemically combined

Homogeneous Mixture

A mixture that is uniform throughout

Heterogeneous Mixture

A mixture that is not uniform throughout and has visibly different parts (example: Salad, Sand)

Physical Properties

Characteristics of a substance that can be obsereved without changing the substance identity observed

Chemical properties

Characteristics that describe how a substance reacts with other substances

Example of physical properties

Color, Shape, Size, density.

Example of chemcial properties

Flammablity, reactvitiy with acid

Physical changes

Changes in the appearance or state of matter that do not alter the substances identity

Chemical Changes

Changes that result in the formation of a new substance

Example of physical changes

melting, freezing, tearing paper

Example of chemical changes

Burning paper, rusting of iron
