Sensitive Conversation
A discussion about topics that may involve emotion, pain, shame, fear, or personal experiences.
Role of Language in Empathy
The use of polite, careful, and non-judgmental words to show understanding and support in sensitive situations.
Tone of Voice
The manner of pronunciation or expression that must be calm, respectful, and caring to avoid causing hurt even when the words are correct.
Empathetic Response Structure
A three-step method for responding that involves recognizing feelings, showing that one is listening, and giving support.
Active Listening
A listening process that requires full focus and active participation rather than just hearing the sounds.
Attention
The aspect of active listening that involves giving full focus to the person speaking.
Understanding
The effort to comprehend the specific meaning and the feelings behind what the speaker is saying.
Feedback
Appropriate responses, such as questions or short replies, used to show the speaker that they are being heard and understood.
Validation
The act of acknowledging and recognizing the feelings of the person speaking.
Empathy
The ability to feel and understand the specific experiences and emotions another person is going through.
Verbal Indicators
Words used to demonstrate that one is listening and respects the speaker's feelings, such as "Thank you for sharing."
Non-verbal Indicators
Physical actions and expressions, such as eye contact and nodding, that show one's attention is on the speaker.
Turn-Taking
The orderly exchange of speaking opportunities in a conversation, which demonstrates respect and prevents interruptions.
Backchanneling
Short responses, words, or gestures that indicate a person is following and understanding the speaker without interrupting them.
