To express one’s self / creation of ideal self or emotions

Social, Political, Historical (Function)

reflects the events of history, and used for political reasons

Visual Delight (Function)

simply b/c it’s pretty (has no function)

Experienced Individual (Role)

shows personal viewpoints; can be used for person expression

Reporter/Recorder (Role)

documents what the artist saw (Communication/Sharing info)

Analyst (Role)

from scientific observations/beliefs; can be connected to spiritual beliefs

Social Activist (Role)

to provoke reaction from viewers; for social, political, and historical reasons

Style

recurring characteristics from civilization/group, time period, or movement

Naturalistic

No stylization, can be easily recognized

Abstract

stylized, simplified, or distorted art

Non-Objective

in the artist’s mind/ something hard to recognize/depict

Realism

no idealization; focuses on real ideas

Subject

recognizable objects, stories, or events that can be easily depicted on the surface

Art Movement

trend of art which defines a period

Iconography

study of subjects based on objects and symbols

Disguised Symbolism

hidden symbols from objects

Visual Literacy

ability to recognize why you’re responding to art in a certain way and how it communicates to you
