  • rather than governing the societies that were already there, the europeans essentially created new societies

  • the spanish were at the top (even though they were the minority)

sugar colonies

  • these colonies did not provide much wealth until the sugar production

  • the portugese sugar colonies dominated the market for sugar until the british, spanish, dutch, and french turned their colonies into sugar-producing colonies

  • sugar production was labor intensive and was most efficiently produced in mass quanities

  • the labor was very harsh and unpleasant

  • since there was a high demand for labor, they turned to the transatlantic slave trade

  • this started a period of lots of slave trade in the atlantic reigon

colonial societies in new york, pennsylvania, and New England

  • these settlers wanted to escape the european society, rather than recreate it like the other colonies

  • men were given more power at the heads of their independent farms

  • this gave less power to the women in these societies

  • few girls attended schools, and most of the church members were women, except only men could be ministers

  • there were mostly europeans in these colonies, because the natives had been wiped out from disease, escaped, or killed because of the harsh labor
