Constitution

The supreme law of the land that outlines the framework for government, establishes the separation of powers, and guarantees individual rights. (Usually beginning with a statement of the government’s mission)

The three branches of government

The Legislative (make the laws), Executive (enforce the laws), and Judicial (interpret the laws) branches that ensure a system of checks and balances.

Checks and Balances

System that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of other branches.

Two-tier system

Any structure divided into two distinct levels or groups, where one level enjoys more benefits, higher status, or different rules than the other.
